Everyone is making reference to "these uncertain times" but I want to talk about the power in uncertainty. With so many opportunities to stay in the moment, be in the moment and take a moment, an uncertain future makes precious -- each moment.
"If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the moment."
Mindfulness as therapy requires specific focus on these moments while abandoning thoughts of past regrets and future fears. In "these uncertain times" our collective inability to imagine a future existence — combined with the paralyzing inability to take action on a regretful past — creates unique opportunities to stay in the moment.
For me, as several “days of perfect moments” accumulated, my confidence grew and I was able to assuage any fears I had about where my life will be weeks, months — or even years from now.
How did I do it? And, where do you start? ...with the breath, the simple breath.
Can’t get started? Well when my mindfulness and meditation practice becomes bombarded with intrusive thoughts, my favorite breathing exercise for getting back into the moment is the 4-7-8 breathing technique. This technique can be accomplished almost anywhere and at any time. I will load a video which shows the ways in which 4-7-8 can be used to lower your heart rate and induce sleep but for now, I will let Dr. Andrew Weil demonstrate the basics.
